In Physical Education classes at Mountain View our students learn the skills they need for a lifetime of physical activity.

Jay Thatcher, our PE teacher, teaches each class once a week for 30 minutes.  Additional times for physical activity and instruction are provided by classroom teachers.

It’s important that students come to PE class ready to learn actively.  Clothing and footwear should provide for safe and comfortable exercise, such as sit ups  and running on the gym floor or on our sawdust track.

Each half hour lesson in PE includes:

· Introductory Activity:  Quick-starting gross motor movement to allow for an overall body warm up and to practice the self-management skills, such as freezing, listening and working together that will be used throughout the rest of the lesson.

· Fitness Development:  About eight minutes of cardiovascular or strength development.  We work in a style that includes all students at whatever their current fitness level is.

· Motor Skill Learning:  10 to 15 minutes for learning a new skill or putting one already learned into an activity.

· Game A few minutes of fun.  Often this will grow right out of the motor skill session.
